Fun on the Web Feb 16, 2018 - Chinese New Year

Gung Hay Fat Choy or Gong Xi Fa Ca!That means Happy Chinese New Year.  That’s the traditional Chinese New Year greeting that means “wishing you prosperity” in Mandarin.

This is the most important of Chinese holidays, celebrated by billions of ethnic Chinese around the world. It’s a 15 day celebration end with the Lantern Festival. Each year is represented by one of twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac. For Chinese New Year 2018 - The first year of the earth dog since 1958.

Anyone born in an earth dog year will be communicative, serious, and responsible in the workplace.

Before the New Year's celebration, people will normally do a complete cleaning of the house, settle debts, and put on the traditional New Year decoration. A lunar month is around 2 days shorter than a solar month. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar, an extra month is inserted every few years. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.

Chinese New Year celebrations, also known as the Spring Festival, in China start on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month of the Chinese calendar lasts for about 23 days. In other countries it may be just a 15 day celebration. Each day holds a special significance that varies according to local traditions. It is celebrated with lion dances, fireworks, family gatherings, family meals, visiting friends and relatives, giving red envelopes of "lucky money" to friends and relatives (use numbers ending in 8), and decorating with poems on red paper.

Fun on the Web Feb 13 2018 - Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is Fat Tuesday in French. I have never been there, but always wanted to go. Not to just Dallas, Huntsville, Mobile or Galveston where there are lesser celebrations but go to New Orleans aka NOLA for at least a couple of weeks leading up to Mardi Gras.

Carnival is actually an entire season which starts right after Twelfth Night. (The twelve Days of Christmas are from December 25th through January 6th. Twelfth Night, January 6th is Epiphany, the day the wise Men visited the Christ Child.)

This is the season for the winter social season in the south. Balls (some masked),  King Cake Parties (where a tiny baby is hidden inside the cake and the finder hosts the next King Cake Party), Parades, Costumes, and Marching Bands are all part of the fun dating back into the 1700's according to written accounts. The first and oldest krewe, the Mystick Krewe of Comus was officially started in 1856.

The French population which was largely Catholic, regards Lent as a somber time that starts at the stroke of midnight on Ash Wednesday but before that as they say "Let the Good Times Roll" or "Laissez les bon temps roulez!"  The Carnival Season ending in Mardi Gras brings people from all over the country.

Made it home before there was too much snow but it's cocoa time. I like mine with some whipped cream and Bailey's Irish Cream now that I'm in for the night. Or I could try Warm Apple Cider with SMIRNOFF® Kissed Caramel® and a cinnamon stick. Decisions, decisions!

I'm already tired of winter. It's been brutal. We had Italian Night Thursday and it was 7 degrees when I was outside....brrrr. The car never warmed up! A bit warmer today but the snow is drifting down pretty steady now and we may get more than 4 inches overnight.

Who saw their shadow? That will be the question most of the day after sunrise. Groundhogs Day is always a day when those of us in the north look forward to finding out if we are having early spring or six more weeks of winter.
