Fun on the Web Jan 29 2015 Memes

Do you enjoy memes from Facebook or iCanHasCheezburger? What is a meme? A meme is a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc. that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users. Most recently Grumpy Cat has joined the ever changing cast of characters including Ceiling Cat, Willie Wonka, Dos Equis, Obama, and many, many more..

The word meme was coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, as an attempt to explain the way cultural information spreads. It can also be an idea that is spread from blog to blog or any thought pattern that replicates itself via cultural means; a parasitic code, a virus of the mind especially contagious to children and the impressionable.

Ever wondered how they get created? You can create your own memes here:

Lead up to Mardi Gras

Did you know that Mardi Gras is a season that starts on January 6th (Epiphany) which is the end of the Christmas season. (The twelve days of Christmas.) That's right parades started on January 6th but this weekend they start in earnest.

If you are thinking of going, check out the schedule but don't count on finding a room. You need to make plans, everyone else did. It may be too late to be there for Fat Tuesday but there is still plenty to see every weekend until the big day.

Fun on the Web Jan 28 2015 Chalk Street Painting

I know I am in denial about winter but it is warn somewhere, isn't it?

No matter if you call it a Chalk Festival or Street Painting, "its a physically and emotionally challenging art form.  It is usually pastel chalk or tempera paints on the pavement or sidewalk.  It can be a spontaneous act, a way to get an idea out to the public, an artist trying to make a living or part of an organized event.  Large events or sponsors often hire featured artists to create custom works.  Some of the 3D works are interactive, inviting the public to become part of the art."

Look at the amazing art both on the site and through the links here:
http://www.amazingstreetpainting.com/events.html

Although this blog is not posted regularly it does explain how she got into the Street Painting scene

Fun on the Web Jan 25 2015 Principles of Success

20 Principles of Success found on a friends post on Facebook

1.  The only thing in life you have control over is your perspective. No matter what happens, YOU control what the meaning is, and what to do with the meaning you give to the circumstance.

2.  Have more fear of regret than failure.

3.  Failure is only part of the journey to success. There is not one success story out there that hasn’t experienced failure. The reason you are hearing about it as a success story is because those people saw failure as a tool to get it right.

4.  It’s not about what you want to do for a living, it’s about you who want to be. What is your purpose and legacy?  I believe the age-old question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” is wrong. We need to be asking, “Who do you want to be? What footprint do you want to leave in this world?” From there, you will have your answer as to what you should “do.”

5.  Stay focused on your race within. When you are too busy looking behind and around you, people are passing you by.

6.  True leadership comes from good energy. Worry more about what your energy is like than the firmness your handshake.

7.  Life will give you the same challenges/problems over and over again until you learn your lesson.

8.  Until you jump over your inner roadblocks, your outer ones will stay firmly in place. We spend so much time focused on all the exterior obstacles around us, letting them be our excuses. But the more clear and aware we are of our internal roadblocks, and dissolve them, the external roadblocks will begin to disappear, too.

9.  The most successful people are the ones that work on themselves first.

10.  Do not judge—be inspired. If you are too busy judging everyone and everything around you, you are not remaining open to find inspiration in everyone and everything around you.

11. You are not allowed to complain about something unless you are going to do something about it.

12. Surround yourself with people you want to be like.

13. Learn to become comfortable with being uncomfortable. The more fears you face, the more you will grow.

14. Always ask, “What if?” and, “Why Not?” Instead of thinking, “What if I fail?” ask, “What if I succeed?”

15. Creativity is your unlimited capital. Understand and harness its power.

16. “I only have good days.” If you start off everyday with this mindset, even when challenges emerge, your positive mindset will help you overcome them more readily.

17. Create your own footprint. You do not need to do what others have done before you.

18. Hit the “mental reset button.” When you are thinking negative thoughts, envision hitting the “delete” button in your mind and begin to rewrite a better story.

19. Abundance is everywhere. You must choose to see it and believe it in order to fully experience it.

20. There is a lesson in everything that happens to us—wisdom to be gained and gratitude to be given. Begin with gratitude and everything else will reveal itself.

Fun on the Web Jan 24 2015 Netiquette

According to Dictionary. com netiquette is a noun defined as the rules of etiquette that apply when communicating over computer networks, especially the Internet.

Wikipedia says "Netiquette, ... is a set of social conventions that facilitate interaction over networks, ranging from Usenet and mailing lists to blogs and forums.

Following Netiquette guidelines, helps users make the Internet a civil place to communicate and share ideas. We could not exist without others ideas, beliefs, and passions. In general, these are useful guidelines in a glance for conducting yourself anywhere on the 'Net'.

No spam aka junk mail. You know how much you hate getting it.

Support sponsors Do the "right thing," and use your manners, and treat others with the same respect you'd like in return.

Maintain perspective - discussing books is not the same as offering proposals for world peace or cures for cancer.

Acknowledge and return messages promptly.

Copy with caution. Don't copy everyone you know on each message.

Avoid sarcasm. Remember  the person who reads your post or email can't see your face or hear your voice and can easily misinterpret what you are trying to convey. And while emoticons seems silly, they can temper the tone of posts to prevent miscues.

Use words in brackets, such as (grin), to show a state of mind.

Never post out of anger, and if someone else does, ignore it.

Flame wars make everyone uncomfortable - bystanders in particular - and stifle discussion. It's better to take a day or two off than to add fuel to the fire.

Always remind yourself: Those are real people out there with the same feelings I have.

Always ask yourself: Would I say this to someone's face? If the answer is 'no', reread, rewrite, or consider not posting at all, or until some time has passed. Do your best to act within the laws and ethical manners of society whenever you inhabit "cyberspace."

Avoid coarse, rough, or rude language.

Observe good grammar and spelling.

Be concise.

Be patient. Not everyone has the same level of knowledge about posting. Consider cutting newbies some slack.

Do an occasional spot check: Am I holding myself back too much in fear of looking silly or "causing trouble?" On the flip side, in my enthusiasm for sharing ideas, am I becoming a forum/list hog?

Learn the dynamics of a forum or list before jumping in. There are ways to share your thoughts that encourage discussion and ways that discourage discussion and create bad feelings.

Learn the parameters of a forum or list so that you can stay on topic.

If you share a first name with another poster, we hope you will add a last initial to your posts in order to cut down possible confusion.

Before hitting the "post" or "send" button, remind yourself that your comments may be read by thousands of people. Are you sure you want to post/send, or would it best be shared with a smaller group of people?

Remember the adage: "You are not the center of cyberspace." This is superfluous to most readers but when you're deeply involved, it's easy to forget that other people have different ideas and concerns. What you're passionate about may not be important to someone else, or they may be passionate about your concern, only in reverse. ( I started FOTW because I have a big mouth. It takes me a lot of self-control on a daily basis not to get into every single discussion that interests me; too much of a good thing is still too much.)

You will eventually post something that will come back and bite you on the butt. It's embarrassing, unpleasant, and can feel awful, but if you remember netiquette, you'll minimize this.

Fun on the Web Jan 21 2015 Get Organized

I am a bit of a procrastinator. I don't leap right in with New Years Resolutions that get broken before the month is out. I am a list maker and not everything on the list gets done that day. Sometimes I have a running list and sometimes I start over on a regular basis but I do break things into steps. Build a better To Do List:

Instead of saying laundry, I say wash whites, wash dark, wash towels, etc. It lets me cross off each step as they are completed instead of leaving things hang when I get interrupted. I accept that I will get interrupted whether at work or at home. Fighting ADD is a never ending process so breaking things down makes sure each step gets finished. Here are some great ideas on list building.

http://www.43folders.com/2005/09/13/building-a-smarter-to-do-list-part-ii

Now that I am going back to school, I will need to be more organized so I have been looking for help with that process.

Fun on the Web Jan 20 2015 Trivia

So maybe I am a little strange. I love trivia and exploring on the web. You never know where it will lead you. Thrillist obsessed with everything that’s worth caring about in food, drink, and travel. Started back in 2003 as a newsletter and now a full fledged web phenomena with sister sites to sell you clothes and other goods.

Also of note: a list of facts you think you know but got all wrong.

Fun on the Web Jan 18 2015 Search for Flights

Checked out some deals on these sites while booking one for my upcoming visit to sunny California. Other than that its a quiet day here while we wait for the Packer - Seahawks game to start. Snacks are prepared, the kids are getting some screen time because before kickoff Dad will take over the big screen. A hush will fall except when particularly brilliant play is made and excited utterances abound.

Fun on the Web Jan 16 2015 Being Poor

So every time I am unemployed I suddenly feel poor. Not that I really am, because I make more than minimum wage on unemployment. That's supposed to be enough to live on right? Seriously, I know this is temporary for me but it's a great reminder. It also makes me mad when people talk about welfare fraud because I just don't believe it happens that often. It's too hard and too little return on the time investment.

I do know how to play the game however, so I started looking for free and sliding scale health care because I need it. (I broke a tooth and it's killing me.) Once again I was reminded how little care and concern anyone has for your time. Remember, you are supposed to be looking for work as if it was a full time job.

I just spent all day getting my mouth x-rayed for the upcoming extraction. This started at 8 am when I started calling to see if they could "fit me in". It ended about 4:30 pm when I got home and packed my cracked tooth with stuff the dentist recommended. I did a couple of errands like get a parking permit (10 minutes tops) and a small (less than $40) grocery shopping trip but seriously, all day?

Yep, and next week I might be done with that but I still need teeth cleaning (which granted, I now know where I can go cheap) and medical which can wait, but again I have done the groundwork. I spent a good part of two days assembling information, calling places to see if I met their criterion, printing out documents to prove I am poor, and filling out paperwork.

I have yet to spend the time to get my $16 worth of foodstamps. That's right I do qualify, for a whole $16 a month provided I go with tax returns, statements from unemployment, picture ID, and who knows what else they want now. I don't believe a phone call or online option will do it but probably another half day of hurry up and wait will.

Getting down off my soapbox now but after all, it is my forum here so every once in a while I just have to vent. OK so now I am off to sign up for some free school I discovered but that is a story for another day.

Fun on the Web Jan 15 2015 Health and Medicine

So I am suffering with a toothache due to a broken tooth so I have been investigating dental and medical clinics along with prescription programs. This site has savings plans, links to free and sliding scale clinics, and a handy app to remind you to take your medication called NeedyMeds Alert which has a side benefit of storing your medication list.

Fun on the Web Jan 6 2015 Brunch

So back in the day, brunch for me meant big long tables covered in white linen, one or two men in tall chefs hats carving roast beef and ham, making omelettes and pancakes to order, a wonderful array of selections from seafood to fresh fruit, and spending hours with friends and family eating, laughing and having a good time. In Milwaukee a good "German" based town, we call it Gemuchlichkeit (It means a space or situation that is warm and cozy, that induces a cheerful mood and peace of mind, without a need to hurry or worry.)

As a kid we went to Silver Spring Country Club for Champagne Brunch N56 W21318 Silver Spring Dr. | Menomonee Falls  Brunch from 10 am - 1:30 pm (December - Mother's Day) $22.95 It includes peel and eat shrimp, smoked salmon, assorted entrees (I always thought those were iffy), carving board, bacon, sausages, omelettes, a waffle station, fresh fruit, pastries, and now they have a chocolate fountain! For more information or availability, call (262) 252-4994

Now mostly if you want brunch buffet you have to head west. At this point we say Machine Shed is the best. They have an awesome selection of food from 8 am to 2 pm including the aforementioned ham and beef, bacon, sausages, omelettes, a waffle station, smoked salmon, sausage and gravy, cheesy hash brown casserole, fresh fruit, pastries, fried chicken, and the price is right at $14.49.

Sunday Brunch Buffet 10-2 wonderful dishes from omelette flatbreads to weekend wake ups and Wisconsin Supper Club Lazy Susan Bloody Marys but there is no menu on the website so probably a call would be a best chance at finding out what they have, how much, etc. Phone: 262-567-5242 37238 Valley Rd Summit

Fun on the Web Jan 5 2015 Tourist Traps

When we were kids, my Mom used to drive us to Florida every year. We would go through Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, and Kentucky, or sometimes Georgia before we reached Florida, which just goes on forever. On the way we would beg to stop at Stuckeys for pecans, Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park to see Monkey Island, Weeki Wachee Springs to see the Mermaids, and Alligator Farms up and down the highway. We loved these wayside stops as much for the break from driving in the car as for the content of whatever place we finally stopped.

We also went to Busch Gardens in Tampa, SeaWorld, and the Glass Bottom Boats at Silver Springs State Park. One year we went to the historic city of St. Augustine to see the fountain of youth, the jail, and the fort. Always we had to stop at a citrus farm and get oranges and grapefruit to take home. Man, I hated dragging them into the hotel on the way home so they wouldn't freeze but they sure were good eating.

We almost always stayed in Clearwater Beach at the same resort with the same snowbirds we saw the previous year. To get there we drove across the Intercostal Waterway where there is nothing to see but water on either side for miles. It was great to be able to walk sand dunes (which got really high after the hurricane) and collect shells on the beach in winter but it was always tough to go home after that experience.

Have you missed these tourist traps from every state? I know we have except for a few.

Fun on the Web Jan 3 2015 Chocolate Covered Cherry Day

Happy National Chocolate Covered Cherry Day.

We are off to the indoor farmers market today. I can't wait! Sounds like a great day for salad and since I am invited over for turkey dinner (or should I say lunch) immediately after we do the farmers market, salad will probably be all I can handle for dinner.

Hope you enjoyed my fun on the web today!

Fun on the Web Jan 2 2015 Getting Settled

Moving to a new place online is just as complicated as in real life, so this will be a work in progress for the next few weeks. It takes time to get organized, put links into the sidebars, adjust colors and background photos. I do hope to continue to publish regularly and perhaps even expand a little. I will continue to ramble on from time to time but mostly this is about things I find interesting and want to share with others.

Since I don't move every year there will be changes and challenges I have to face in the template and design features. I hope you will bear with me as I try to "get it right".  Thanks!
