Most recently Grumpy Cat has joined the ever changing cast of characters including Ceiling Cat, Willie Wonka, Dos Equis, Obama, and many, many more..
The word meme was coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, as an attempt to explain the way cultural information spreads. It can also be an idea that is spread from blog to blog or any thought pattern that replicates itself via cultural means; a parasitic code, a virus of the mind especially contagious to children and the impressionable.
