Fun on the Web Jan 5 2015 Tourist Traps

When we were kids, my Mom used to drive us to Florida every year. We would go through Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, and Kentucky, or sometimes Georgia before we reached Florida, which just goes on forever. On the way we would beg to stop at Stuckeys for pecans, Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park to see Monkey Island, Weeki Wachee Springs to see the Mermaids, and Alligator Farms up and down the highway. We loved these wayside stops as much for the break from driving in the car as for the content of whatever place we finally stopped.

We also went to Busch Gardens in Tampa, SeaWorld, and the Glass Bottom Boats at Silver Springs State Park. One year we went to the historic city of St. Augustine to see the fountain of youth, the jail, and the fort. Always we had to stop at a citrus farm and get oranges and grapefruit to take home. Man, I hated dragging them into the hotel on the way home so they wouldn't freeze but they sure were good eating.

We almost always stayed in Clearwater Beach at the same resort with the same snowbirds we saw the previous year. To get there we drove across the Intercostal Waterway where there is nothing to see but water on either side for miles. It was great to be able to walk sand dunes (which got really high after the hurricane) and collect shells on the beach in winter but it was always tough to go home after that experience.

Have you missed these tourist traps from every state? I know we have except for a few.
