The first Saturday in May is Kentucky Derby Day. It is a spectacle and as many holidays it really is more than one day. It starts the Saturday before with a benefit and runs through the week with many events. You can even wander the area around Churchill Downs before and during the races on Friday and Saturday.
If you have never been there, here are some tips. Make sure to pass on the Mint Juleps but do try the barbecue which is amazing even from the vendors selling from grills on the lawns approaching Churchill Downs. There is a full day of racing culminating in the greatest 2 minutes in sports. Before that visit the horses, make a bet, and above all all watch the hat parade.
