Fun on the Web Feb 2 2015 Happy Groundhogs Day

Who saw their shadow? That will be the question most of the day after 7:10 am when we have sunrise. Groundhogs Day is always a day when those of us in the north look forward to finding out if we are having early spring or six more weeks of winter.

Here is a great explanation and history of Groundhogs Day:

Are you a big fan of Punxsutawney Phil? He is the one you most often see on TV and in newspapers. He has had about 39 percent accuracy ever since 1886. Sure enough, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow in Pennsylvania, signaling six more weeks of winter.

This Groundhog has his own club with a Ball on January 30th, events on Jan 31st and February 1st from 8 am to 8 pm range from Art Shows to Wine Tasting, Chain Saw Carving to a Top Hat Decorating Competition, an Amish Quilt Auction to FREE S'Mores. There are events for both kids and adults.

For over 60 years Wisconsin has had their own Groundhog, Jimmy. BTW he is right in his prediction about 80% of the time. Not sure I will be out there having the breakfast buffet but it might be fun. (Yes, in Wisconsin its always about the food.) BTW according to his website...."Jimmy arrived by limo to a well bundled up crowd at Cannery Square! There is nothing quite like the muffled applause of mittened hands! Jimmy did whisper his prediction…. And that is the beginning of a confused prognostication. As the mayor leaned in to hear Jimmy’s message, Jimmy nipped the mayor’s ear! Not serious, but enough to lend confusion to the event! The Mayor said Jimmy told him Early Spring, but since there was not a cloud in the sky… We’re pretty sure he misinterpreted it!"

Was it Wiarton Willie in Ontario who saw it? In 55 years this has become a full on festival.

Buckeye Chuck is one of two groundhogs in Ohio known for predicting the arrival of spring. A native of Marion, Ohio, Chuck began predicting the arrival of Spring in the 1970s. Although he doesn't have his own website, Wikipedia says he is the Official State Groundhog.
